Training a dog can be as easy as ordering dinner, or as difficult as preparing one.
Each dog is an individual and must be handled accordingly. In order for you to be effective in training your dog, you must understand his actions or body language, his thought process, and the
instincts that have been developed within him. Body language can tell you a lot about what he is doing or what he intends to do. When you can read a dog's body language, you can also read his
intentions. The dog in turn learns your body language, mood, and voice tones. He does not need instruction for him to accomplish this, as he simply observes you and learns. As a puppy in the litter,
they begin reading the body language of the dam and their littermates, and they know what to expect and what is expected. They are aware of the sounds around them, and can quickly identify them.
An amazing number of individuals will attempt dog training without any prior knowledge of a dog's psyche, temperament, or breed specific attributes and/or flaws. Some are successful in their
training, while others are not. They make an effort at training, only to become frustrated with the dog. Then, when training has gone terribly wrong, they will either abandon training, call a
professional, or get rid of the dog. The successful ones are generally very lucky.
Learn what makes a dog tick.
|
Before you can begin any type of dog training, it is best to learn what makes a dog tick. Learning the history, temperament, and idiosyncrasies of a breed are paramount when attempting to train.
Reading a book on your particular breed can be helpful in understanding your dog's abilities, his traits, and get a general idea of what can be expected of him. In addition to those, you must realize
that each dog is an individual, and just like humans, each has its own personality. Knowing what makes him tick will make training him less difficult.
There are a variety of methods for training a dog, and no one method will work on all dogs. Finding the right one could be more costly and time consuming than the actual training. A good trainer
should be able to recognize each dog's idiosyncrasy and modify his training method in order to train the dog successfully and without undue stress.

At Abney Canine Training we incorporate every means available to assist your dog in completing the requirements of the course being taken. Although there are specific course guidelines to be
followed, we sometime find a dog that does not fit into our programming. When this occurs, we make the necessary changes in our program by modifying the instructions and/or method. Changes are made
in order to assist the dog and his handler with performing the required task with the least amount of stress, and to encourage them in continuing their training progress.
Abney Canine Training is located in Abita Springs, Louisiana, serving St. Tammany Parish residents and the surrounding areas. We offer Private and Boarded Training. Private Classes are individual, one on one, training at our location. We try to arrange your appointments around your work schedule, and, we are willing to make arrangements for those who have irratic work schedules. Dogs may be dropped off or shipped to us for training, however, arrangements must be made prior to this type of training to ensure that boarding space is available. Dogs that are sent to us for training must be current on all vaccinations, and must receive a Bordatella vaccine 48 hours prior to entering the kennel.
All dogs that have completed any of the courses offered at Abney Canine Training are afforded free consultations for any problem, including behavior modification, for as long as you own the dog.
